How It All Began
An Idea is Born
In the early spring of 2002 there was a group of former high school grads who attended Lynbrook High School located in San Jose Ca. Many of those alumni stayed in touch with each other through a website called Classmates.com, having fun reconnecting with old friends (and making new ones.)
As these alumni from Lynbrook High were enjoying reconnecting and reminiscing new members were joining Classmates.com daily. Before long Lynbrook High School had more then 4700 former grads as members.
Soon, a former grad named Brian Stuckey, class of 1974, joined classmates. Many of us shared ideas of finding ways to get together and see each other. Why not? We weren’t getting any younger. Then Brian had a wonderful idea of getting as many as possible of his old classmates and friends together all at one time. His idea became known as a "mega-reunion". He shared his idea with some of his old friends and classmates he had stayed in touched with. Of course his idea was accepted overwhelmingly. This idea expanded and before you knew it the Lynbrook High School Mega Reunion of the 60’s and 70’s was born.
Brian quickly got in touch with as many people as he knew that might be interested in helping putting this awesome event together. Continuing to share this vision, and collecting ideas from other interested grads, it was decided that a meeting would be held and a committee would be formed.
First Meeting
The first meeting was held at Jakes Pizza Parlor located on Saratoga Ave in San Jose where 12 old and tired (not really) former grads with big hearts and huge smiles, shook hands, hugged each other, and sat down to discuss the future of the mega-reunion. I must say not much was accomplished because we were so excited in seeing that small group together, spending time catching up, sharing our lives. It was just like being in Mr. Thornburg’s class, as he tried to get his class in order after lunch -- watching Brian trying to get us in order after 25 plus years. Finally we settled down and focused on business. We were going to put a reunion together.
It was decided that we would meet once a month. At that point there was no place to be to get together to discuss our plans. But interest grew with the idea of a mega-reunion and other grads joined in with the planning, including Sue Clark (class of 1973), who allowed us to meet at the Children’s Discovery Museum in San Jose. This was the original location we discussed to have the reunion. Here we formed our original steering committee and committee members. Some are still with us and others have moved on for various reasons.
Ground Work
As each month went by, interest in the reunion grew and grew. More grads were showing up at meetings, showing there support. We decided to move our meetings to Harry’s Hofbrau to feed all those happy, smiling faces. It’s amazing what food and drinks will do. Not only were we meeting for the reunion, we were partying and having our own miniature reunion. Throw in a little food, wine and beer, and being apart for 25 plus years, well, you can imagine.
As time went by changes were made. New people joined the steering committee and new ideas were discussed.
In June 2002, an LHS Mega Reunion website was launched followed by a message board. As people discovered the new website and message board, interest grew more and more. Former alumni were connecting from all over the world. Many for the first time since leaving high school. It wasn’t long before we grew out of our first website. In the meantime, a former grad named Randy Christensen, class of 1970, with an extensive background and experience in web design joined the committee and offered his expertise in redesigning the LHS site to what it is today. It is because of his talents and experience we have the finest reunion website on the internet today.
Financial Assistance
As more time went by, planning continued. Changes were made and the committee continued to find ways to fund this historic event. While attempting to keep cost to a minimum and provide a completely different concept, we had many challenges before us. Our challenges became easier due to many of our special grads who stepped forward with contributions. Jon Drury, class of 1974, (and his company) financed the complete cost of the Joe Sharino Band. Mike Belote donated $500.00 towards the teacher sponsorship program. We are grateful for their generosity, along with other alumni and their contributions.
As the holidays approached planning continued and the committee moved forward with the logistics. Opening bank accounts, meeting with tax accountants, the Internal Revenue Service, obtaining insurance etc. Tickets went on sale November 8th, 2002. More and more our reunion was becoming a reality.
Soon the New Year was upon us and the reunion was in full swing. The message board was out performing classmate’s .com. Grads were logging on from all over. We couldn’t keep up with it. But it was all worth it just seeing everyone connecting and reminiscing.
Soon spring was upon us with just 5 months to go when the Iraqi War broke out. Our focus was not on a reunion but more on the safety of our nation and our troops over seas fighting for our freedom. Our hearts and prayers were directed not only to those fellow alumni who may have sons or daughters in the Middle East, but to all our fellow Americans with family in harms way. They have made us proud to be Americans and our hearts and condolences go out those families who have lost loved ones.
More Help
In the meantime, other former grads were joining the committee including Rob Karr from 1968, who became our Family Day Chairmen. Rob took the reins and has put together an awesome agenda for family day. We are fortunate to have such incredible talent come out of Lynbrook. Rob, who performed with David Pack and Robben Ford,(Ambrosia, Doobie Brothers) has put together a display of awesome talent of musicians who will be performing at Family Day along with other activities planned.
Summer was here before we knew it and the reunion was not far off. More activities were coming together including the Golf Tournament hosted by Scott Hathaway at the Los Lagos Golf Course in San Jose. The Reunion Ride hosted by Samson Wolfe is building momentum. Denise Camacho Hickok who has a heart of gold, is hosting the basket raffle with all proceeds going to the athletic boosters club. Brian Stuckey, whose consideration of our teachers, is leading the teacher’s sponsorship program. Everyone is working together with other alumni to create a memorable event
Soon our attention turned to the Gala event, the highlight of the reunion. The committee turned to Trish Kane class of 1974 whose experience and talent offered us an extraordinary and memorable event. Along with Randy Christensen class of 1970, she worked hard in negotiating contracts and setting the theme and implementing all the gala activities. I can’t say thank you enough for what Randy and Trish have contributed. With out them, none of this would have been possible. I also can’t thank Paul Keswick class of 1975 and our Finance Director enough for his commitment and excellence in planning the budget and keeping us in line.
With just a few days left before this historic event, I look back at all the hard work and planning that has gone into this. We had our ups and downs. We had our disagreements. We discussed, argued, yelled, became angry at times, but we also agreed, laughed, shook hands, hugged and always came together in the finest tradition that only Lynbrook grads could do.
There are so many people who have dedicated their time and efforts in this endeavor. Steve Edmonds 78, Lisa Mason 77 just to name a couple. Everyone that I have had the pleasure of working with in the last 18 months should be proud of themselves. I thank all of you from the bottom of my heart. I know that everyone attending will thank you also.
